ZEKIWA Zeitz real-world laboratory – Sustainable, energy-efficient circular innovations for building, living, and working (ZEKIWA)

The ZEKIWA Zeitz real-world laboratory, initiated as part of the New European Bauhaus (NEB), aims to transform the historic area in Zeitz into a modern, energy-efficient, and sustainable urban district. Several partners from Saxony-Anhalt, including Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, are pooling their expertise to develop innovative solutions for future-oriented building, living, and working. The project focuses on combining ecological, technological, and social aspects to promote comprehensive and sustainable urban development.

Project priorities

A key part of the project is promoting biodiversity. The ZEKIWA site is being used to restore natural habitats and support adaptation to climate change. Urban wild gardens and green corridors create diverse habitats for plants and animals and increase ecological diversity in urban areas. Recycled materials such as bricks or concrete and native seeds are to be used on test fields to try out innovative approaches to soil improvement and renaturation. In addition, research is being conducted into how these areas can be used for energy production, for example through solar panels, without impairing their ecological function. The active involvement of citizens in these processes promotes community-supported solutions and strengthens community participation.
