Transfer in the agricultural sector – smart farming for biodiversity
Project priorities
Digitization and biodiversity conservation are two major challenges for the productive farmland locations in central Germany. To successfully overcome these challenges, we are working with various local stakeholders to develop solutions and options in sub-project 5, “Transfer in the Agricultural Sector,” of the FORZA project (Research and Technology Transfer for Life in the Digital Age).

In order to test whether synergy effects between erosion control and biodiversity protection can be achieved, a demonstration trial with two different multifunctional wild plant mixtures was set up in collaboration with DLG e. V. on a field prone to erosion near the Bernburg university campus.
This practical trial is planned as a block design and was implemented with three variants and four replicates. The following variants were created:
- Grass-dominated variety consisting of 6 grasses and 15 herbs (70% grasses, 30% herbs by seed weight)
- Herb-dominated variety consisting of 3 grasses and 27 herbs (30% grasses, 70% herbs in terms of seed quantity)
- Cultural variant, as in the field (corn/wide row winter wheat)
The aim is to prevent erosion on arable land while providing a diverse range of pollen and nectar sources. Vegetation development, flowering aspects, and erosion events are regularly assessed on the site.
To give you an impression of the established block experiment, we shot a short film in the summer of 2021, which you can watch here.
