Educational transformation to implement ecological sustainability goals in Saxony-Anhalt’s transformation regions (BiNaTra)

The careful use of ecological resources for sustainable development is one of the major challenges facing society. The Sustainability Laboratory (NLAB) prepares teenagers and young adults to understand the challenges of sustainable development and to become agents of ecological transformation. Learners acquire key skills to understand and help shape the transformation historically, but especially creatively for the future, from an ecological perspective. To this end, the NLAB integrates ideas from education for sustainable development, among other things. The content focuses on the effects of historical use (such as open-cast mining and raw material use), measures to restore ecosystems, current use, and future ecological design options.

In addition to two hubs with different focuses in the districts of Anhalt-Bitterfeld and Mansfeld-Südharz, the NLAB integrates learning locations and networks them by employing them as teaching actors of transformation. The district of Mansfeld-Südharz makes it possible to highlight the ecological heritage of mining and open-cast mining and to learn about today’s focus on wood and the bioeconomy as a path to transformation. The district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld enables ecological remediation and development opportunities (modern chemical industry, renewable energies, tourism) to be highlighted as learning locations. The NLAB relies on local companies and educational institutions as partners who use educational offerings to demonstrate the shaping of ecological transformation up close and spark interest among young people in helping to shape it.
