Development of a planning and consulting tool for recording and promoting biodiversity in intensively farmed regions (biodiversity management plan)

The intensification of agriculture in recent decades has led to a sharp decline in agrobiodiversity and the loss of many landscape elements and structures in the agricultural landscape. The agricultural policy instruments and measures applied to date, such as agri-environmental and climate measures (AUKM), have so far had too little effect. This is mainly due to the fact that measures are not adapted to the location, implementation, and maintenance. In addition, farmers’ motivation to participate in such measures must be increased.
In order to optimally integrate the promotion of agrobiodiversity into agricultural operations, planning and advisory instruments need to be established so that ecologically sound, practical measures adapted to the farm can be developed and implemented. To this end, greater use of digital technologies will also be required in the future.
In some federal states, plans are already being drawn up for agricultural businesses to promote biodiversity. These assess the existing structures and species occurrence and develop a catalog of measures specific to the business.

Project priorities

The current project aims to develop planning, assessment, and advisory tools that are specifically tailored to the intensively farmed region of Saxony-Anhalt. To achieve this objective, the project has been divided into six submodules:

  1. Development of a data collection tool for determining the status quo of agrobiodiversity
  2. Development of algorithms for evaluating previous achievements in promoting agrobiodiversity according to strengths and weaknesses
  3. Derivation of company-specific development goals
  4. Compilation of a toolkit of measures
  5. Development of an assessment tool for evaluating and optimizing measures
  6. Communication of results to agricultural practice
